Memory

How long ago it seems now,

A vague memory

Coming through the mist of years,

Surfacing beneath the layers of mask

Like a wild beast trying to break free.

Why this pounding in the chest -

This deafness in the ears?

Why the biting of lower lip?

Why?

  1. Rachael, I love the mist of years, time can cause that vagueness of memory and I feel fear, worry, angst with the feelings that came with the memory. Amazing how that happens, strong, evocative and my heart is pounding just after reading this. I feel similar feelings from memories but cannot source them exactly. Life!! Maire x

  2. Thanks Maire for your comment. This poem is an exploration of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder)those that carry memory of trauma which is not consciously known, but seems to come up in the sufferer's consciousness. They say many of the American soldiers returning from Vietnam suffered this condition, and I'm sure countless others who've suffered trauma in one way or another. Rachael x
