Sunset on Agios Pavlos, Crete

I sit counting ripples on the ocean,
and watch the sun go down upon the bay
as the dog from the hotel
follows me up the mountain path.

For want of a pen, I root in my bag,
and jot down some opening lines
in black eye pencil, so as not to
lose the memory of this moment;

With this action, I reflect on contradictions,
the eye pencil, a symbol of the ego
and its vanity against this backdrop
of purity and innocence.

The sun looks like a large white host
like the one I saw in the monstrance
in St. James's church
in Medjugorje,

beaming out rays of love and beneficence,
giving its all for love
and asking for nothing in return.

  1. Rachael, a lovely photo to go with that fine poem. wonderful to put words and images together like this...
Your blog is looking beautiful. A perfect backdrop for the poetry.
And re your question about posting to FB:
Have you noticed the lineup of options immediately beneath your poem? Facebook is one of them, so if you click on that FB icon your poem will come up on your FB page.

  2. Thanks Barbara for your comment above and yes I had a vague recollection that there were a number of options below the poem and I thought if I went back into it I would find it. I had tried the night before editing my blog to add one of the design templates provided but it did not seem to work.
    Thanks again Barbara.xx

  4. Hi Maire, I saw your lovely haiku on the new site, but could not figure out how to leave my comment. I went down to the end of all the comments, but couldn't see how to comment. I managed to introduce myself. I also read all the comments of people sending good wishes and congrats on the new site, but did not know how to post my own comment. Still trying to work my head around it. I think I saw ripples already on your blog. I can't remember whether I commented. If I didn't, I certainly intended to do so as it is really beautiful and as Katharine said (I think it was Katherine) there are layers of depth to it. R xx

  5. Rachael, I have to comment on this again, it is so spiritual, love the eye pencil, I know the feeling of not having a pen with me and anything will do but also the vanity that you thought about, also love the sun as a host, so much beauty in this poem, excellent on, love it and love the photo too. Maire xx

  6. Maire you are so kind coming back to comment a second time. As always, I appreciate it. After initially starting a blog, I seemed to forget about it, so I'm going try and get more involved with it again, and of course the blogs of all my treasure writing friends. Rachael xx
